The California Central Coast Intergroup of Overeaters Anonymous is sponsoring a special speaker at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, during the Santa Maria Saturday OA meeting.
The event will be at the Bethel Lutheran Church, at 624 E. Camino Colegio in Santa Maria.
A speaker will share her recovery from anorexia and bulimia with the help of the OA 12-Step program and the use of the “Big Book,” a text published by Alcoholics Anonymous.
The health consequences of compulsive eating result in the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The OA 12-Step program does not endorse a specific plan of eating or exercise. Instead, it addresses the underlying causes of food addiction. All three eating disorders - binge-eating, anorexia and bulimia - are considered compulsive, according to Overeaters Anonymous.
For information about the event, call 937-8269.
The Intergroup supports 13 OA meetings from Lompoc to Atascadero.
