Aviation Venturers invite local youths
Area youths from 14 to 21 years old who are interested in aviation are invited to a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 3001 Airpark Drive to learn about a new program called Aviation Venturers.
The new program was designed by both the Santa Maria chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Los Padres Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
“It's designed to be a hands-on program with an in-person connection to aviation,” said John Ready, a member of the Santa Maria chapter of the EAA.
Some members of the chapter will serve as mentors to the young people who will participate in the program.
Students will receive training through Areoscholars, a program that offers online courses designed to prepare students interested in aviation for the private pilot's written exam.

Thunder Over the Valley Aug. 23, 24
Organizers of the annual Thunder Over the Valley Airshow are planning to hold this year's event Aug. 23 and 24 at the Santa Maria Public Airport.
Military aircraft and demonstration teams are already lined up for the event, said organizer Mike Geddry. Additionally, he is still looking for sponsors, volunteers and local entertainment.
This year, organizers are hoping to have more “local attractions,” such as a car show, booths or live bands, Geddry said.
Anyone interested in helping out should contact Geddry at 345-9001 or stop by the Santa Maria Museum of Flight, 3015 Airpark Drive.

PG&E offers some a 20 percent discount
Central Coast Pacific Gas & Electric officials are urging low- and fixed-income customers to sign up for the California Alternate Rates for Energy program and receive a 20 percent discount on their monthly bills.
So far, fewer than half of the eligible customers in San Luis Obispo County have signed up for the program, officials said, and in Santa Barbara County, about
25 percent of eligible households are not signed up.
The CARE program provides an average annual discount of more than $500 per household. New income guidelines became effective Sunday, and more customers now qualify, officials said.
Under the new guidelines, a family of four making a pre-tax annual income of no more than $43,200 would be eligible. To check eligibility or to sign up, customers can call toll-free (866) PGE-CARE or visit
www.pge.com/care. Additionally, CARE applications are included in the company's June bills.

Pizza on the Pier will be held on the first diamond of the Pismo Beach pier.
The Police Department said they hope this event will continue to foster a positive image of the department with local children.
The pizza will be donated by Dell's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant, and the drinks will be donated by Pepsi.

Mom whose home burned opens fund
A Santa Maria woman who lost her home after the house she was renting in the 500 block of West Main Street burned to the ground in April has opened an assistance fund at Rabobank.
Sandra Bumanglag-Williamson said she has lost everything in the fire, and is seeking help from the public. She said she does not have renter's insurance, and she is the single mother of a 10-year-old girl.
The American Red Cross provided temporary housing for her.
Bumanglag-Williamson said donations can be made to the Rabobank account # 0557974021.
