The life of the Rev. Virgil Cordano, a beloved spiritual figure in Santa Barbara, was celebrated Friday during a funeral at the Santa Barbara Mission.
The Franciscan priest died May 22 at the age of 89 after recently being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
A former Santa Barbara mayor called Cordano “the heart and soul of Santa Barbara.”
He served as a long-time pastor for the Santa Barbara Mission and was perhaps best known outside the church for his role in the city's annual Fiesta, having served on the Old Spanish Days board for 45 years.
