Oil leak reported at Greka facility

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a reported oil leak at Greka's Black Road facility Thursday afternoon.

The leak involving three tank batteries occurred around 4:35 p.m., fire officials said, and appeared to be significant. A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the scene.

Warrant leads to drug arrest

A Santa Maria man was arrested on suspiction of possessing more than 207 grams of methamphetamine with a street value of $20,900.

Armijo Gutierrez, 39, was charged with possession of methamphetamine for sale.

He was booked in Santa Barbara County Jail, and was being held without bail, according to jail officials.

At 6:09 p.m. Thursday, Santa Maria Police officers conducted a search warrant at a residence on the 100 block of South Bradley in Santa Maria.

There, police reported finding the methamphetamine and $1,744.

Drug arrest made after traffic stop

A Santa Maria man is in custody for allegedly possessing 31 grams of methamphetamine and loaded weapons in his vehicle.

Joseph Patrick Dunken, 29, was charged with possession and transportation of methamphetamine for sale, possession of a firearm in committing a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Because Dunken is on a parole hold, he was being held without bail, according to jail officials.

At 12;20 a.m. Thursday, Santa Maria police officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Cypress and Pine streets.

Police said they found the drugs, with a street value of $3,100, two loaded weapons, and a rifle.

They arrested Dunken and conducted search warrants at a motel in the 1600 block of Broadway, and a residence in the 800 block of Camino Callejo.

Three arrested on conspiracy charges

A Lompoc man was among three people arrested this week by Santa Barbara police on suspicion of conspiracy to commit homicide and participation in a criminal street gang.

Carl Samuel Flores Jr., 26, of Lompoc was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop in the 1500 block of North Avenue in Lompoc. He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail in lieu of $1 million.

Also arrested was Robert Joseph Martinez, 22, of Santa Barbara and Joel Robles, 22, of Ventura, police said. Both were arrested at their respective homes.

Police allege that all three are members of a criminal street gang.

Cities to receive grant money

Three local governments are scheduled to receive federal grant money to help boost traffic safety.

Santa Maria is expected to receive $145,229 in 2009 Traffic Safety Grants, according to a statement released by the state office of traffic safety, the agency administering the money. The money is planned for DUI enforcement and awareness programs.

The city of Santa Barbara was also awarded $112,898 for a similar program, and Santa Barbara County was awarded $129,802 for a DUI supervision program.




Vandenberg AFB

Chili Cook-off sponsors wanted

Sponsors are sought for teams taking part in the Air Force Association's eighth Charity Chili Cook-off that will fire up June 14.

The event will take place on the grass quad near the Base Exchange at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Sponsorships cost $150 and include a personalized company sign. Those who don't want to field a team can instead sponsor one made up members from a base organization.

Cooking starts at 6 a.m., with judging at 10 a.m. and eating extending from 10:30 a.m. until it's all gone.

Chili costs $5 for adults or $2 for children 10 and under. Bread will be provided.

Each team must have no more than four members and should plan to cook four to six gallons of chili. Participants must provide their own propane stove, pots and cooking utensils. Electrical outlets are not available in the area.

Prizes will be awarded for the judges' top chili, people's choice and best decorated booth.
