Two Ventura County residents are in custody for allegedly possessing methamphetamine, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.

United Launch Alliance employees will donate $10,000 to nonprofit groups through funding from the former Boeing Co. employees' community fund.

ULA will present the donations to nonprofit groups at a luncheon today at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

“The employees of United Launch Alliance are committed to supporting the area communities in which they live,” said Mark Dowhan, ULA deputy director for launch operations. “Over the years, they have generously contributed not only their money but also their free time to make our communities a healthier and happier place for all of our families.”

Nonprofits groups that will receive $1,000 checks include Boys and Girls Club of Lompoc; Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria; Toys for Tots in Santa Maria and Lompoc; Good Samaritan Shelter; Operation Kids Christmas; Make a Wish Foundation; Lompoc Valley Community Youth Center; Community Partners in Caring; and American Cancer Society Inc.

Formed in 2006 from Boeing and Lockheed Martin, ULA combines the programs of the Delta and Atlas expendable launch vehicles.

Man loses vehicle after gun threat

A suspect reportedly pointed a gun at a Santa Maria man Tuesday night, scaring him off and driving away with his 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Jose Manuel Ramos, 19, was driving his Tahoe in the 100 block of North Russell Avenue around 9:30 p.m. when suspects began to yell at him, Santa Maria police said.

Ramos got into an argument with the suspects and pulled over his sports utility vehicle to confront them, police reported.

One of the suspects pulled a gun on Ramos, according to police, and Ramos, fearing for his life, ran away.

Ramos was not injured, and the investigation was continuing.

Waller Park pond to be drained

The lower pond at Waller Park will be drained for maintenance work this week, according to Santa Barbara County parks officials.

The draining began Wednesday, and water levels may remain low for up to two weeks. The upper pond will remain full.

The work is needed to repair circulating pumps that cycle water from the lower pond to the upper pond, officials said. Crews are planning to leave as much water in the lower pond as possible, and any fish in it will be relocated to the upper pond.

Officials also expect ducks and other birds to migrate to the upper pond.

Crews hope to simply repair the pumps, but if parts must be replaced, the work could continue for up to 90 days. If this occurs, officials said, the pond will be refilled but the fountain will not work while the pumps are off.

Santa Barbara

Request in News-Press case denied

A federal judge has denied a request by the National Labor Relations Board to reinstate eight workers fired from the Santa Barbara News-Press, according to a ruling made public Wednesday.

The board claimed the workers were wrongfully terminated for union activity and other reasons.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson said in his ruling that an injunction calling for the workers' reinstatement would prevent the paper from exercising what it's asserting as its First Amendment right to combat union efforts to limit its exercise of editorial discretion.

Attorney Ira Gottlieb, who represents the workers, said he was disappointed with the ruling and hoped the labor board would appeal the decision.

E-mail messages left for NLRB spokesman Tony Bisceglia and News-Press attorney Barry Cappello were not immediately returned.

Newsroom employees voted to form a union in September 2006. The workers and the newspaper had been fighting since then over the legitimacy of the vote, which was certified by the labor board in August.
