Eight AHC players earn All-WSC baseball honors

EIght Hancock College baseball players earned 2008 Western State Conference All-Conference honors.

Sophomore relief pitcher Mickey Jannis, an Arroyo Grande High graduate, earned a spot on the first team.

Freshmen infielders Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.), Corey Dotzler (Lompoc High) and sophomores Dane McLaughlin, an outfielder from Arroyo Grande High, and Sam Jones, a pitcher from Morro Bay High, made the second team.

Freshmen Dave Anderson (Las Vegas) and Sheldon Lechuga (St. Joseph High), and sophomore David Harman (Righetti High) all earned honorable mention.

Quentin Cate of Cuesta was the conference's Player of the Year. Teammate Bryan McConkey, a St. Joseph graduate, made the First Team. Cuesta's Pat Haugen and Bryce Uhrig of Santa Barbara were the WSC's co-Pitchers of the Year. Cuesta's Bob Miller was the WSC's Coach of the Year. His Cougars rolled to the conferenc title.

OneWay wins Ventura Water Polo Tournament

The OneWay water polo club went 4-0 in the Ventura County Youth Water Polo League Tournament held April 26 and 27 at the Ventura College pool.

OneWay competed in the league's 14-and-under Division II.

In the tournament opener on Saturday, April 26, OneWay defeated the Titan Water Polo Club 13-3.

In the second game, OneWay defeated Ventura County Development 13-2.

Jeremiah Morales had five goals, A.J. Franklin, Tommy Grall and Steven Tedsen had two goals each.

In Sunday's semifinals, OneWay defeated Malibu 11-2.

Travis Knight had four goals, Colter Knight and Tommy Grall had two goals each.

In the championship game, OneWay defeated the Santa Barbara Water Polo Club 9-0.

A.J. Franklin had 3 goals. Travis Knight and Steven Tedsen had two goals each. Jeremiah Morales notched the shut in goal.

OneWay Polo team members are Carson Dacus, Lucas Enberg, A.J. Franklin, Tommy Grall, Colter Knight, Travis Knight, Jeremiah Morales, Steven Tedsen and Devon Tomooka.

OneWay was 6-0 in league play in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

OneWay Youth Polo is open to all area boys and girls ages 7-14. Workouts are held Sundays from 1-3 p.m. at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center. For more information visit www.onewaywaterpolo.com.

Meagher and Dodos named to All-CCAA baseball team

Two Chico State baseball players, who played their high school ball locally, have been named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association team.

Designated hitter Josh Meagher (St. Joseph/Cuesta) was named to the all-conference first team and Jimmy Dodos (Righetti/Hancock) was named honorable mention.

Meagher leads the Wildcats with a .397 batting average, second in the CCAA. He has hit 14 doubles and has 46 runs batted in.

Dodos is hitting .373, second on the team. He leads the team in base hits at 63 and is also the team leader in runs (47) and stolen bases (15). Dodos has not committed an error in 88 chances in the outfield and has seven assists.

Chico State (37-13, 24-11 CCAA) is ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division II rankings and will be the third seed in the CCAA playoffs that begin this Thursday at their home field, Nettleton Stadium.

GWC's Correa earns Greco-Roman wrestling state title

Matt Correa of the Guadalupe Wrestling Club went 5-0 at the Greco Roman State Wrestling Tournament at Temecula last weekend. Correa won the state championship in the 15-16 Cadet age group.

Correa decisioned defending state champion Vinny Moita of the C.Y.C. 3-1 in the first and second rounds. Correa reversed things on Moita, who beat him in the Junior State Finals two weeks ago.

Correa's long-time freestyle coach Johnny Martinez said, “Matt's hard work and determination is finally paying off. The wrestling club is extremely proud of Matt's great achievements this season. Matthew is ranked in the nation as one of the best wrestlers in his age group.”

The GWC's Josh Rodriguez placed sixth in his age group at the state tournament.

Newly-formed CVCS soccer club slates tryouts

The CVCS, a product of the partnership between three Santa Maria Valley soccer club organizations, is holding tryouts Saturday at the east end of the Adams Basin near Stowell Road.

According to a CVSC news release, OUSL, SMVYSA and SMISO collaborated to form the CVSC.

Tryouts for Under 10 through Under 13 boys and girls players will be from 9-10:30 a.m. Tryouts for Under 14 through Under 18 boys and girls will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All Star Cheer and Dance sign-ups

The Santa Maria Valley All Stars are holding open registration for its Cheer and Dance teams on Tuesday, May 20, from 6-8 p.m. at the YMCA at 3400 Skyway Dr.

The team is open to children ages 5-18.

The registration fee is $15.

Good Samaritan Services Celebrity Softball Game

Tickets are now on sale for Good Samaritan Services second Celebrity Softball Game scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 at the Hagerman Sports Complex in Santa Maria.

Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino and his team of local luminaries will defend their title against Lompoc Mayor Dick DeWees and his celebrity team.

Proceeds benefit Good Samaritan Services Recovery Art Program.

Tickets are $10 each and include a tri-tip sandwich, chips and soda.
