Clerks cited for alcohol infractions
Four clerks were cited Tuesday for providing alcohol to minors during a decoy operation conducted in Solvang by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), reported the sheriff's department.
Eleven wineries and wine bars were visited Tuesday as part of the decoy operation. Seven of the establishments refused to sell alcohol to a minor, according to the sheriff's department.
In addition to the four alcohol sales citations, a woman who was walking with an open container of beer was cited, reported the sheriff's department.
The clerks will face a minimum fine of $1,000, and/or 24 hours of community service. In addition, ABC will take administrative action against the alcoholic beverage licensee.
The operation was funded by a grant given to the sheriff's department by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Grant Assistance Program.
Goleta
New hours for Los Padres office
The Forest Service has new office hours for the Los Padres National Forest Supervisor's office in Goleta.
Starting Monday, the office at 6755 Hollister Ave. will be open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., officials said. The office will be closed daily from noon to 1 p.m.

Mail carriers part of food drive
Central Coast residents are being asked to leave non-perishable food next to their mailboxes today as part of a nationwide food drive by letter carriers with the U.S. Postal Service.
Today marks the 16th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. Food left near mailboxes will be collected by letter carriers and then taken to local foodbanks, organizers said.
Last year, 70.7 million pounds of food was collected across the country.
Goleta
Man injured in crash with stopped car
A Goleta man suffered a broken leg and cuts and abrasions when he apparently failed to realize that the traffic ahead was stopped and crashed his motorcycle into the back of a car on northbound Highway 101 north of Highway 217, reported the California Highway Patrol.
Curtis Oshock, 53, was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Maria Alvarez, 49, of Lompoc - driver of the 1999 Nissan Sentra that Oshock's 1989 Honda motorcycle crashed into just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday - was not injured.
Witnesses said Oshock switched lanes, apparently not noticing that the traffic ahead was at a standstill, the CHP reported.
Oshock was wearing a helmet. The crash remained under investigation, and alcohol was not involved, according to the CHP.

Talk on religions set at Cal Poly
Zayn Kassam, chairwoman of the religious studies department at Pomona College, will give talks Monday and Tuesday as part of a Cal Poly lecture series on “Islam in the Modern World.”
Kassam will present “My Journey After 9/11” from 7 to
9 p.m. Monday in the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Building, Room 123.
She will talk on “The Veil: Piety or Punishment” from
11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, also in the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Building, Room 123.
Kassam is a frequent commentator on Islam in the modern world, said a Cal Poly spokesman. She has written a number of essays and articles on Islam and is editor of the forthcoming volume “Activism, Gender and Islam.”
In 2005, she was awarded the American Academy of Religion's Excellence in Teaching Award.
The free public lectures are sponsored by Cal Poly's Religious Studies Program.

Marshall leaves AG Planning Commission
Richard Marshall has resigned from the Arroyo Grande Planning Commission because he's moving to Napa to take a job with Napa County.
His resignation was announced in a letter read by Community Development Director Rob Strong at the Planning Commission meeting Tuesday.
Marshall has been is in charge of transportation planning and projects for San Luis Obispo County.
He was nominated for his seat on the commission by City Councilman Joe Costello, who will nominate a replacement for approval by the council, Strong said.
