Allison Avila, 10, gets a look at some of the stuffed area wildlife at the Natural History Musuem during the Safari to encourage young poeple and their families to visit area museums. //Len Wood/Staff

Families from around the Santa Maria Valley attended the second Santa Maria Safari Sunday, sponsored by the Santa Maria Library and five local museums.

The event was designed to highlight local museums while giving families an idea of the valley's rich history.

The afternoon began at base camp - the top level of the Santa Maria Library - where passports were given out to participants to help navigate through the various museums.

Participants were then sent to the Natural History Museum, 412 S. McClelland St.; the Santa Maria Valley Railway Historical Museum at the Town Center; the Historical Society Museum, 616 S. Broadway; the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, 705 S. McClelland St.; and the Museum of Flight, 3015 Airpark Drive.

Free bus service was available from Santa Maria Organization of Transportation Helpers, SMOOTH, to get to some of the more-distant locations.

The Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and Altrusa International of the Central Coast were also on hand with goodies for the children in attendance.
