Santa Barbara County
Agreement reached for conservation
A half-mile stretch of beach commonly called Paradise Beach, along with several tide pools, are part of a permanent conservation agreement reached by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County and partner agencies.
The 143-acre site is just north of Point Sal within the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Complex, and has been a high priority for conservation initiatives.
The area includes coastal dune and bluff scrub habitat, freshwater seeps and populations of endangered surf thistle.
“This is one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches I have ever been to in my life,” said Bob Hill, conservation director of the Land Conservancy. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to protect it forever.”
Oceano Dunes
High surf strands some campers
A roaring surf early Sunday morning swamped about a dozen campsites, said Oceano Dunes Ranger Robert Tolin, trapping some campers in the high water.
The tide started washing back out by 8 a.m. Sunday, and campers were then able to leave their spots, he said.
Such high surf is rare, he added.
Campsites at the dunes were filled nearly to capacity this weekend, Tolin said, as the spring break season is underway.
Although there were no major incidents this weekend, there were a lot of alcohol and marijuana violations, Tolin said.
