The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo will again hold tryouts for horse riders who want to carry sponsors’ flags.
The carriers ride around the rodeo arena while carrying flags with the names of local and national sponsors.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, with tryouts starting at 9 a.m. at Vaughn’s Arena, 1185 Camino Caballo, Nipomo.
About 50 riders have already signed up, organizers said.
This will be the only session, and tryouts will occur even if it’s raining.
Would-be flag carriers must try out on the horse they plan to ride during the rodeo.
Riders will be judged on horsemanship, arena procedure, appearance, personality and overall performance.
To pre-register for sponsor flag carrier tryouts, call 929-5784 by Friday afternoon.
The 65th Annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo will be May 30 to June 1.
