2008 Elks Rodeo details released

The theme for the 2008 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Parade will be “65 Years of Friends, Family and Tradition.”

This year's rodeo is May 30 through June 1, with the parade hitting Broadway on May 31.

The 2008 Elks Rodeo will feature just three performances - in the evening on May 30 and afternoon on May 31 and June 1.

A Professional Bull Riders Inc. competition, featuring only bull riding as part of the PBR's Challenger Tour, is planned for May 29, a Thursday night that had traditionally had been opening night of the rodeo.

For rodeo and PBR tickets, call 922-6006, or call www.santamariaelks.com.

Letter-writing event to protest budget set

Parents and educators at Alice Shaw Elementary School will host a letter-writing campaign Tuesday to protest the local impact on students and schools of the governor's proposal to slash $4.8 billion in education funds statewide.

The group will write to members of the legislature to uphold Proposition 98, the 2006 voter initiative that guarantees a certain level of funding for schools in the state.

The campaign will take place from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Alice Shaw, located at 759 Dahlia Place in Santa Maria. Everyone is welcome.
