Neighborhoods throughout the Santa Maria Valley are twinkling with colored lights and other decorations aimed at spreading a little holiday joy.

As more homes get into the spirit, nominations keep rolling in for the annual Lights, Sights and Holiday Nights home decorating contest, presented by the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and the Santa Maria Valley Lions Club.

The nominating period closes Monday and homes are slated to be judged Wednesday between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Homes in Santa Maria are judged by members of the Recreation and Parks department staff and commission and homes in Orcutt are judged by the Santa Maria Valley Lions Club.

Awards will be given for a number of categories such as best decorated, best use of craftsmanship and most nostalgic.
