Arroyo Grande
Contract awarded for road rehab
A $561,649 contact for rehabilitating Farroll Avenue was awarded to Union Asphalt Inc. of Santa Maria on Tuesday by the Arroyo Grande City Council.
Construction is expected to begin in early January and be completed by mid-March, according to a city staff report.
The work includes replacement of a water line, rehabilitation of the roadway, completion of missing sidewalk segments, installation of a handicapped-access sidewalk ramp and the addition of bicycle lanes.
City staff noted the bicycle lanes will result in the loss of parking spaces along the south side of Harloe Elementary School, which could draw opposition from parents who park there to pick up and drop off students.
But Lucia Mar Unified School District supports the bicycle lanes for improved safety of students who ride to school, according to a staff report.

Blood bank appeals for donations
Blood donations on the Central Coast declined markedly during Thanksgiving week, raising concerns for the local blood supply, blood bank officials said.
Donations during Thanksgiving week averaged just 173, compared to the daily need of about 270 units, so United Blood Services Central Coast is asking everyone who can to give the gift of life this holiday season and donate blood, a spokeswoman said.
People who donate blood before Dec. 2 will be given a
certificate for a free Quiznos sandwich, the spokeswoman said.
Donations can be made at the blood center in the Creekside Center, 4119 Broad St., San Luis Obispo. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome, the spokeswoman said.
The donation center is open Monday through Friday and a half-day on Sunday. Call 543-4290 to make an appointment.

Former SB County supervisor endorses Adam Hill
Former 2nd District Supervisor Shirley Bianchi, who retired from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors in 2006, has endorsed Adam Hill's candidacy for 3rd District Supervisor.
Hill is challenging incumbent 3rd District Supervisor Jerry Lenthall, who was endorsed by Bianchi when he ran for supervisor in 2004, defeating challenger Patty Andreen.
Hill, a Grover Beach resident, said he is deeply honored to have Bianchi's support.
Hill and Lenthall will face off with any other candidates in June 2008. If neither takes a majority of the vote, a runoff will be held during the November election.
