Latin crooner Julio Iglesias will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Samala Showroom of the Chumash Casino Resort. Tickets are on sale now and range in price from $55 to $105.

With more than 250 million records sold worldwide, Iglesias has performed more than 5,000 concerts and recorded albums in 14 different languages throughout his lifetime, according to a recent press release from the Chumash Casino Resort; and earned the world’s only “diamond disc,” with more than 2,500 platinum and gold discs to his name. He received a Best Latin Pop Artist Grammy in 1988.

Born Sept. 23, 1943, in Madrid, Spain, Julio Jos/ Iglesias de la Cueva rose to international prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as a performer of romantic ballads. As the iconic suave Latin gentleman, his success continued as he crossed musical and linguistic barriers.

Iglesias, who is a father to eight children from two different marriages, initially planned to be a lawyer. As a student, he was a goalkeeper for the Real Madrid soccer team; but his career as an athlete ended after an automobile accident in the mid-1960s. While he was recovering, Iglesias started playing guitar and writing songs. In 1968, he won first prize in a Spanish music competition, singing his original song “La Vida Sigue Igual,” which led to a record contract with Discos Columbia.

During the 1970s, Iglesias toured Europe and Latin America, gaining a fan base with hits like 1975’s “Manuela.” By the end of the decade, he began to record not only in Spanish, but in Italian and French, as well.

Iglesias began to pursue the American and British markets by concentrating on his English recordings. His efforts began to pay off in 1981, when his cover of “Begin the Beguine” became a No. 1 hit. His major crossover success was 1984’s “110 Bel Air Place,” a collection of duets which featured “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” with Willie Nelson and “All of You” with Diana Ross.

By the 1990s, Iglesias was recording mainly in Spanish, as well as in a handful of other languages. He continues to sell out concert venues around the world, and last performed at the Chumash Casino Resort in 2004.
