SPORTSWIRE - Ralph Gorton Named Hancock Basketball Coach

Ralph Gorton has been named the new men's basketball coach at Allan Hancock College. The Board of Trustees approved Gorton's appointment at their last meeting.

Gorton replaces Bob White, who resigned after 23 years as the head coach. White will remain in the program as Gorton's chief assistant and continues as a math instructor at the college.

“We are pleased to welcome Ralph as our head coach,” said Roger Welt, the college's vice president of Student Services. “He knows the program and knows the conference, and we anticipate his transition to the top spot will go very smoothly.”

Welt thanked Coach White for his decades of service. “Bob is a true Bulldog and we are thrilled that he will remain a part of the program,” he said.

With a wealth of basketball experience, both as a player and a coach, Gorton moves to the top spot after serving the last two years as an assistant under White, following six years as an assistant to head coach Rusty Blair at Cuesta College.

A graduate of Joel Barrow High School in Redding, Connecticut, Gorton spent his freshman year at the University of Connecticut. He transferred to Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. Gorton played three years for the Blue Devils and was named team captain in his senior year. He graduated with a bachelor of social sciences in 1978.

A longtime Central Coast resident, Gorton has owned the Just Looking Art Gallery in downtown San Luis Obispo for the last 23 years.
