Meeting set on attending military academies

Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, is hosting an informational meeting on Oct. 2 in Vandenberg Village for those interested in attending U.S. military academies.

Academy Information Night is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Cabrillo High School, 4350 Constellation Road, in the cafeteria.

Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the application process for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Air Force Academy.

Applicants for these schools must be at least 17 years old and not older than 23 and must be U.S. citizens. Additionally, applicants must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation for child support, according to a statement released by Gallegly's office.

High school juniors who are interested in applying next are also invited to attend the informational meeting as a preview.

To attend these academies students must be nominated by a member of Congress. The nomination process is competitive based on criteria from the academies, officials said.

Gallegly is expected to nominate 10 residents of his district, which includes Orcutt, Lompoc and other interior parts of Santa Barbara County plus portions of Ventura County. The academies will make the final decision on acceptance.
