After raising thousands of dollars over the last year, the Arroyo Grande United Methodist Children's Center will unveil its new play structure Saturday afternoon.
Among those expected to be present are Arroyo Grande Mayor Tony Ferrara and San Luis Obispo County 4th District Supervisor Katcho Achadjian.
“I am very impressed by their efforts,” said Achadjian. “Anytime something can be done on behalf of children, it is good to be a part of (it). This is something positive for the entire community.”
The grassroots fundraising that helped pay for the play structure culminated earlier this month with a grand total of $24,000.
A corporate grant worth $5,000 was provided earlier this year by Home Depot to help with the purchase of the play structure.
“The new play structure will challenge a variety of skill levels that require balance, coordination and imagination,” said Maddy Quaglino, children's center director. “It will also enhance a child's physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development.
“It is our goal to offer developmentally appropriate environments which nurture the individual.”
With a staff of seven teachers, the children's center currently has four classrooms providing care to children 18 months to 5 years old.
The center was established in September 2005 with only three children. The school had 25 children in 2006 and this year has 50 children attending.
“The money we raised not only helped us purchase the new play structure but also new sod, new irrigation, lumber and a new bike path for our play yard,” Quaglino added. “We feel very blessed and are thankful for the wonderful community support during this process.”
Among other companies that provided assistance during the fundraising efforts were Vons, Albertsons, United Rental, Newton Construction, Central Coast Farm Supply, and Pasta Toss.
The children's center is also currently selling $25 golf cards, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward future improvements for the playground.
“I think the playground will be a nice enhancement to the school,” said Ferrara. “I will be happy to attend and help out where I can during the dedication.”
The children's center is a nonprofit school licensed by the state as a childcare facility serving families from San Luis Obispo to Santa Maria.
