Bulldogs drill Oilers in division opener

CULVER CITY - West Los Angeles College's football team has had a tough time this year. Hancock College's squad gave the Oilers a rough time Saturday.

The Bulldogs drilled the Oilers, 51-18, in a Western State Conference Mountain Division opener. Hancock is 2-1 overall. West Los Angeles is 0-3.

The Bulldogs play Santa Barbara City College at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Righetti High School's Warrior Stadium. That game is Hancock's conference home opener.

WSC rushing and all-purpose yardage leader Andre Cirino bolted 62 yards for the first of his three touchdowns on Hancock's first play from scrimmage Saturday. Most of the rest of the afternoon, at least as to which team controlled things, went about the same for both teams.

Things were different on the injury front.

Renaldo Bloodworth, a solid backup running back for the Bulldogs, went down after a 38-yard run on his only carry Saturday. The extent of his injury was not known at press time.

A third-quarter snap went over West Los Angeles punter Brian Bloomberg's head. Bloomberg ran back to get it and as he was picking the ball up Neil Tidwell, who had blocked a punt earlier, clobbered him.

The ball wound up at the West L.A. seven, and Hancock wound up with a touchdown when Cirino bolted to the end zone untouched from the one. Juan Velasco tacked on the extra point to make it 44-12.

Bloomberg was on crutches on the West L.A. sideline afterward.

Hancock led 30-12 at halftime. The Bulldogs faced a fourth-and-one from their 49 on the first series of the second half when Cirino burst through a huge hole up the middle and raced unimpeded to the end zone.

Cirino racked up 216 rushing yards last week en route to the Western State Conference Player of the Week honor as Hancock beat Coalinga-based West Hills 41-24. He had 15 carries for 178 yards this time. Cirino was over 100 yards by halftime.

Speaking of 100-yard rushers, Hancock's Terrell Denson was in that club Saturday. He had 100 yards on 11 carries.

The statistics Saturday were typical of Hancock football games in recent years. Lots of yards rushing. Lots of yards given up passing. Lots of penalty yards assessed against it.

Hancock banged out 422 yards rushing on 59 carries to West Los Angeles' 248 yards passing. The Bulldogs were hit with 16 penalties, totaling 165 yards.

The Oilers never really were in this one. Hancock led 13-0 after one quarter. A holding penalty bogged down a Hancock second-quarter drive but Juan Velasco, even kicking into the wind, nailed a 44-yard field goal try.

The field goal was Hancock's first in four attempts this year.

The Oilers saw a nice ensuing drive stall and then never got off their own field goal try. The snap was botched, and Hancock's J.D. Berwick picked off a pass in the end zone.

West Los Angeles' rushing attack, almost non-existent to that point - really. The Oilers totaled eight net rushing yards their first two games - showed some life Saturday. Still, the Oilers had just 80 yards on the ground.

Hancock quarterback Casey Cathcart was a solid six-for-10 passing for 106 yards. He put West L.A. in a 22-0 hole when he hit Kyle Pollack with an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Denson's 19-yard run the play before set up the score. Tyler DeRose helped spring Denson with a big downfield block.

Cathcart connected with George Henry III for 63 yards and a touchdown after Trason Bragg had gotten West L.A. on the scoreboard with a seven-yard touchdown run. That made it 29-6 late in the second quarter Diondrea Bryant finished Hancock's scoring with a two-yard run in the third.

With the game in the bag early, Hancock's coaching staff substituted liberally throughout afterward.

Cal Poly 47, Weber St 19

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Former Hancock starter Jonathan Dally threw a school-record six touchdown passes, including four to Ramses Barden as Cal Poly beat Weber State for its first win.

The Mustangs (1-2) had opened the year 0-2 for the first time since the 2002 season but jumped out to a 33-3 halftime lead in their home opener.

Barden had touchdown catches of 9, 24, 9 and 67 yards, finishing with 219 yards on nine receptions. His four touchdown catches also were a school record, breaking the previous mark of three set by nine other Mustangs.

Dally finished 13 of 20 for 328 yards against the Wildcats (0-2).

His six touchdowns broke the school record of five set by Seth Burford against Montana State on Sept. 23, 2000.

Weber State's two touchdowns came on a 45-yard reception by Tim Toone and an 83-yard kickoff return by Bryant Eteuati.
