CAMARILLO - Righetti High School's Bobby Barajas won the CIF Northern Regional Tournament shooting a 5-under par 66 at the Sterling Hills golf course in Camarillo on Monday.
With the win, Barajas earns a spot in the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship at the PGA of Southern California golf course in Beaumont on Wednesday, May 23.
Barajas carded 4 birdies, an eagle, and one bogey during the one-round playoff.
Of the field of 82 golfers, the top 30 players qualify for the Championship round.
PAC-7 golfers who advance to the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship along with Barajas include Nipomo's Jeff McNeil (75) and, after winning a six-way playoff, Arroyo Grande's Bryan Pierce (76).
Qualifying for the Southern Section Individual Championship from the Los Padres League were Morro Bay's Eric Olsen (73) and Santa Ynez's Jonny Henno (75).
PAC-7 golfers who did not advance were Paso Robles' Ben Bourgault (79) and Jon Eric Cook (DQ) and Atascadero's Jason Peters (77). Los Padres League golfers who did not advance were Morro Bay's Matt Hansen and Santa Ynez's Parker Colvin - both shooting 83.
New Brackets Released
IRVINE - Fans of Central Coast baseball and softball teams will have to hit the road for the opening round of the Southern Section playoffs, according to the baseball and softball brackets released on Monday.
Only five of the 16 teams included in the playoffs open their postseason at home.
Both of the Santa Maria Valley's baseball entries out of the PAC-7 earned first-day home games: No. 3 entry Pioneer Valley hosts a Division II wild-card game against Burbank today at 3:15 p.m., while PAC-7 titleist Righetti hosts Pacific League No. 2 entry Arcadia at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The other PAC-7 baseball entries, No. 2 seed Atascadero (at Dos Pueblos, Thursday) and No. 4 seed Paso Robles (at Ventura, today) open on the road.
St. Joseph's baseball team, the LPL's No. 3 entry, heads to Anaheim to face Savanna on Thursday in Division IV play, while No. 2 Cabrillo will be forced to face Pioneer League No. 2 entry El Segundo on the road. Los Padres champ Lompoc opens at Dan Bodary Field on Thursday against Oak Park, the Tri-Valley League's No. 3 entry.
The other LPL baseball entry, No. 4 seed Santa Ynez, travels to South Torrance today for a Division IV wild-card match-up.
As for softball, only LPL champs Templeton and PAC-7 winner Atascadero garnered home games in the opening round, with Templeton hosting San Marcos in Division IV on Friday, while Atascadero opens Division II play against the winner of today's Norwalk-Mira Coasta wild-card game.
Both St. Joseph and Lompoc hit the road in Division IV action on Friday, with the Knights traveling to Ventura to face Buena, while Lompoc travels to Torrance for a matchup with Bishop Montgomery.
Both Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles begin Division II play at the wild-card level in Long Beach on Wednesday, with Arroyo Grande facing Wilson, and Paso Robles taking on Millikan.
In the other CIF team sports still in action, Santa Ynez hosts Arroyo Grande in a Division II second-round volleyball match tonight at 7 p.m., while San Luis Obispo travels to Laguna Beach for another Division II second-rounder.
Tennis sees Santa Ynez, the area's lone remaining team, traveling to Walnut - the No. 4 overall seed in Division IV - for a quarterfinal match today at 2 p.m.
