Elks Team Roping, Youth Rodeo qualifying begins today
The first competitions in the 64th annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo are being held today and tomorrow, May 18-19, at the Elks Unocal Events Center.
The local Elks Team Roping qualifying begins at 8 a.m. today and continue until approximately 4 p.m. The Youth Rodeo qualifying begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.
The top finishers from the team roping advance to the finals, with buckle runs during each performance of the Elks rodeo, Thursday through Sunday, May 31-June 3.
The top youth wranglers go for their buckle runs during the annual mini-rodeo in front of a full house of local students on Thursday morning, May 31.
Admission to the team roping qualifying and youth rodeo qualifying is free. Food stands and restrooms wil be open and the public is encouraged to attend.
Good Samaritan Celebrity Softball
Good Samaritan Services is hosting an invitational celebrity softball game to raise funds for the Recovery Art Program (RAP) on Sunday, May 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hagerman Field.
Lompoc Mayor Dick DeWees and Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino will captain teams made up of local luminaries such as Judge Rogelio Flores, Judge James Iwasco, City Council member Hilda Zacarias, Police Chief Tim Dabney from Lompoc, Ben Heighes and Hoot Hooten from KINF/KUHL and others.
There will also be bounce houses for the kids, a home-run derby, raffles, barbeque and much more. The price of admission also includes a tri-tip sandwich and soft drink.
Tickets are $10 with the funds going to purchase art supplies, equipment and instruction for the Good Samaritan Homeless Education/Liaison Project, Recovery Point, Detoxification Acute Care, and Project P.R.E.M.I.E. programs. Tickets go on sale April 9th.
All proceeds help support the Recovery Art Program. Good Samaritan Services provides emergency, transitional and support services to the homeless and those in recovery throughout the Central Coast.
