Katana makes Cup semi-finals
The Katana Under 16 Girls squad advanced to the semi-finals of the CalSouth State Cup last weekend.
The Katana ran up against the Chula Vista Rangers in the semis and went down 3-2. Katana coach Gonzalo Garcia said three of his players were injured to the extent they could not continue in what he called a physical game.
“This was probably as good a game as we have ever played. It was just hard to play against such a physical team as the Rangers,” Garcia said.
Cabrillo High School sophomore Diamonne Mitchell, a forward, scored both Katana goals. The Katana won four games and tied one to qualify for the semis. The Katana consists of Mitchell, goal keeper Hannah Vellekamp, defenders Hailey Newberry, Cheyenne Martinez Trevino, Nicole Martinez, Alyssa Carillo, Heather Soden and Rachel Hernandez; midfielders Berenice Guzman, Laura Wald, Monique Zarate, Sara Epps and Justine Garcia; and forwards Aolani Rueff, Kylie Mugg and Ruby Navarro.
The Katana went 30-11-4 in 2006-7.
