Dozens of students and their parents decided to spend their family time playing board games instead of watching TV Wednesday night at Ralph Dunlap School in Orcutt.

The school's “Family Games Night” is in celebration of the national “TV Turnoff Week,” a campaign to draw attention to the effects that TV watching has on people's health and family dynamics.

Nancy Pusser, a neo-natologist at Marian Medical Center and a Dunlap parent who's heading the event, said this is the third year the school is celebrating the campaign.

“This is the week to step away from screen activities like DVDs, TV and the arcade,” she said. “We want people to focus on healthy things like running outside, riding a bike or spending time with family.”

Aside from games, people were treated to healthful snacks, drinks and a raffle for prizes.
