Santa Marians of all ages took advantage of the break in storm systems Saturday to go outside and celebrate Mother Nature, at the Santa Maria Natural History Museum's Earth Day festivities.

For the sixth annual event, crews shut down a portion of South McClelland Street to allow various educational exhibits.

The theme for the day was “Our Earth, our future,” and the event is intended to teach people about the environment and the toll human beings take on the planet, organizers said.

The Natural History Museum of Santa Maria invited the public to celebrate Earth Day with a variety of displays and educational booths on environmental awareness. 3-year-old Miac Che Guevara, above, checks out cool recycled toys.

In addition to the education booths, Al Gore's movie “An Inconvenient Truth” played continuously throughout the event, and conservation awards were handed out.

Also held Saturday was an alternative fuel car show in San Luis Obispo at Mission Plaza. Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition hosted the event that was expected to display 20 different alternative fuel vehicles.
