SPORTSWIRE - Hoobery takes 2nd at Gary Player Classic

Santa Maria's Macgregor Hoobery a fired a 2-under par 142 to claim second place at the Mission Hills Gary Player Classic on the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) over the weekend.

Playing the the boys 13-15 year old division, Hoobery shot rounds of 69 and 73 on Saturday and Sunday to finish two strokes behind A.J. McInerney of Henderson, NV, and one stroke ahead of third place finisher Trace Libby of Park City, UT.

An eighth grader at Orcutt Junior High School, Hoobery now has two wins and five top three finishes on the FCWT this season. He was trying to become only the second three-time winner on the FCWT this year.

Reid Martin of Mukilteo, WA, is the only 13-15 division player to win three times this season. Martin finished in fourth place at the Player Classic.

Local roller hockey team wins event

ALAMEDA-A 16-and-under club roller hockey team, operating out of the Central Coast Sports Arena in Santa Maria, won the gold division of an AAU Regional qualifying tournament in Northern Calfornia over the weekend.

The CCSA Rage defeated the Oregon Wildfire of Bend 5-2 in the championship game. Featuring players from Lompoc to Paso Robles, the Rage trailed 1-0 halfway through the game, before scoring five unanswered goals.

Lompoc's Tony Orr scored to tie the game 1-1. Ryan Kozak, from Orcutt, then scored a hat trick to put the game out of reach.

It was a tough road to the final game. The Rage defeated the Black Beauty Quakes (Teal) from Campbell, CA 4-0, tied the Quakes (Black) 4-4, defeated the Reebok Patriots of San Jose 9-1, before losing to the Wildfire, 5-4, setting up the championship rematch.

The Rage, with a depleted roster, following an ankle injury to Lompoc's Brandon Berryman, played inspired hockey throughout the day.

Kozak had two hat tricks and earned defenseman of the tournament honors. Goalie Kyle Weistien, from San Luis Obispo, was named the top goaltender of the tournament.

The Rage is coached by Mitch Orr and Bernie Flamm.

Santa Ynez wins LPL three-way meet

Johnny Henno and Tyler Sheen each shot rounds of one-over 73 to share medalist honors for Santa Ynez in a Los Padres League three-way meet with St. Joseph and Templeton at Alisal Ranch on Monday.

Santa Ynez won the team event with a team score of 396, followed by St. Joseph's 422 and Templeton's 530.

A.J. Woronovich added an 81 for the Pirates, while Parker Colvin had an 84 and Mike Swetech an 85.

Chris Blystone and Joseph Collins each shot rounds of 80 for St. Joseph, while Collin Crist had an 83, Joey Balducci had an 87, and Jeremy Williams a 92.

D.J. McCormack led Templeton with a 92, followed by Clint Powers' 105 and Ryan Turner's round of 122.

The Los Padres League teams travel to La Purisima on Thrusday for a league mini-tournament.

Saints fall short in LPL loss to Pirates

Eric Olson shot a two-over 74 to lead Morro Bay to a Los Padres League victory over Santa Maria at Rancho Maria on Monday afternoon, 404-503.

Mitch Valine added a 77 in the win for the Pirtes.

Jeff Rivetti led the Saints with a round 85, while Brennan Nacar had a 92 and Jacob Castillo a 93.

Nipomo nips Righetti in PAC-7 action

Tyler Clark's one-over 73 led Nipomo to a 390-405 PAC-7 League victory over Righetti at Black Lake on Monday.

Rory Doll shot a 76 for the Titans, while Jeff McNeil had a 77 and Colt Hoffman an 81.

John Biegel led the Warriors with a 78, while Bobby Barajas had a 79 and Stephen Temple and Alexander Gilbert each shot rounds of 82.

Nipomo hosts the PAC-7 mini-tournament on Thursday.
