YMCA Cheer squads place first and second in Las Vegas

The Santa Maria Valley YMCA cheer and dance teams grabbed a first and a second place at the recent JAMZ cheer and dance Nationals in Las Vegas.

The competition was held in the Alladin Theatre in the new Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino on Friday, March 23 and the Orleans Hotel and Casino on Saturday, March 24.

The 11-member senior team - with girls age 8 to 15 - took home the champions trophy. The junior team - with girls age 5 to 11 - brought home the second place trophy.

The The Santa Maria Valley YMCA cheer and dance is in its third year and offers teams for both boys and girls ages 5-18.

The YMCA holds tryouts for next years teams from April 2-5. All local children are encouraged to participate.

Condors tryouts

The Central Coast Condors Soccer Organization is expanding its program. The Condors are holding open tryouts for teams from the under-11 up to the under-17 age divisions for the 2007-8 season on April 17 and 19 at River Bottom Fields.

The tryouts will run from 5:30 until 7 p.m. each day.

Interested players should bring an age-appropriate ball, shin guards, boots and water,

CSA tryouts

The Cherif Soccer Academy (CSA) United under-13 girls team is holding annual tryouts from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 12 at Hancock College.

Girls who are interested in playing competitive soccer and were born after 7/31/93 should attend tryouts.

Please bring a #5 soccer ball and soccer gear to practice. A parent must attend the first practice to sign the necessary release form.

West Coast Xtreme Spring Break-Hoop & Shoot Camp

The West Coast Xtreme is holding a Spring Break Hoop and Shoot Basketball Camp at St. Joseph High School April 9-12.

Local high school basketball coaches Ed Torres and Ron Barba are the instructors. The cost is $60 per camper. Registration is on a first come basis.

The basketball camp is open to girls and boys in the third through eighth grades. Post and perimeter offensive skills, footwork, ball handling, screening, competition and contests will be included in the four day camp. Athletes will then be provided an opportunity to develop offensive skills taught in a 3-on-3 setting. There will be two divisions - the NCAA Division for boys and girls in the third through sixth grades and the NBA Division for boys in girls in the seventh and eighth grades.

The NCAA Division camp runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. each day and the NBA Division camp runs from 10 a.m. until noon.

Bull Canyon Run

The 2007 Bull Canyon Run will be held on Saturday, May 12th.

This is the eighth running of the Bull Canyon Run, which kicks off at 8 a.m. with a 5K and 10K run and walk.

Applications can be picked up at the Santa Maria Police Department, Santa Maria Rec & Parks or Santa Maria City Hall. You can also register online at www.bcrun.org.

The cost is $20 for adult runners and $15 for walkers and youth runners. You can register the morning of the event for an extra $5.

All participants receive a t-shirt, a race medal, Powerade and morning snacks (fruit).
