Driver arrested after high-speed chase

A suspected street racer was arrested early Thursday after leading Santa Maria police on a high-speed chase.

David Daniel Franco, 24, of Diamond Bar, was arrested on suspicion of felony reckless evasion of a peace officer and misdemeanor engagement in a speed contest, Santa Maria Police said. He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Franco is believed to be the driver of one of two vehicles engaged in a race in the 1200 block of West Main Street around 12:33 a.m., said Sgt. Mark Norling.

When police tried to stop both vehicles, the vehicle driven by Franco fled the scene and led officers in a high-speed pursuit, Norling said.

Franco was found in the east alley of the 1000 block of South Russell Avenue and was arrested, he said. The other vehicle got away, said Lt. Craig Ritz.

A Grover Beach man and former employee of a drywall store was arrested Thursday after confessing to stealing a computer from the business, police said.

Grover Beach Police said that Steven Anderson, 21, confessed to taking a computer from Graham's Drywall, 1092 Huston St., sometime Thursday.

The owner told police that when he entered the business, he discovered someone had gained entry by breaking through a wall from an adjoining room, according to Lt. Jim English, and suspected Anderson was the culprit.
