Nipomo celebrated its homecoming in style with a 42-6 win over Santa Maria Friday night at Nipomo High School.
Billy Chambers rushed for a game-high 208 yards on 23 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the Titans to victory. He had been averaging 95 yards per game before the breakout performance.
“I was just reading with my eyes and making good cuts all night,” said Chambers. “We gained lots of momentum tonight especially by winning on homecoming. We should be feeling good for next week.”
With the win the Titans broke a three game losing streak and improved to 2-3 in the Los Padres League, 4-4 overall. Santa Maria falls to 0-5 LPL and 2-6.
The Titans were also led by Steve Otto with 74 yards of rushing and two touchdowns and Garrett Frisby with 52 yards and a touchdown. Santa Maria rusher and quarterback Daniel Gauna chewed up 77 yards on 16 carries to lead his team and scored the lone touchdown.
Quarterback Mason Sperakos didn't have to worry about throwing out his arm for the Titans since he only passed once.
“We didn't need it,” Sperakos said of passing. “We knew we would come out tough, and we blew them back from the first snap.”
Guana also kept the ball on the ground as he only threw three incomplete passes.
Nipomo got on the board less than two minutes into the game when Sperakos ran in to the endzone from four yards out. His touchdown was set up by the combined rushing efforts of Otto and Chambers who had 15 and 33 yards rushing respectively on the drive.
On Santa Maria's first drive they fumbled the ball away at the 40 yard line. And Nipomo picked it up and scored four plays later on Otto's 29 yard run up the middle.
Santa Maria never really regained the momentum in the rest of the half.
Nipomo scored again with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter to take a 21-0 lead on Chambers' 22-yard run up the middle.
The Titans improved their lead with six minutes left in the second quarter on Otto's 10-yard touchdown. Garrett Frisby scored a 5-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds left on the clock to lift the Titans to 35-0 at halftime.
After Sophia Gallizio was named homecoming queen and Ryan Williams homecoming king, the Titans gave some of their reserve players time on the field.
The Saints collected themselves after the break and used a dozen plays to get back to the other side of the field from their own 35. A 10-yard run by Halston Chapman and two runs of nine and seven yards by Guana helped keep the drive alive. Guana scored with 3:18 left in the quarter on a quarterback keeper from 7 yards out.
Nipomo's final drive started with 6:23 left in the game. Andy Lord and Frisby plugged away at the defense for a 13-play drive which was capped by Everado Vences' 2-yard run with 1:39 left in the game.
Seguine remained perfect with his extra point attempts to seal the 42-6 win.

Reade Lodbill rushed for 247 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Eagles to a PAC-7 road victory over the Bearcats, a game in which the Eagles did not attempt a single pass play.
Lodbill, who had only 15 carries on the night, scored his first touchdown on a 64-yard scamper in the first quarter, coming after scoring runs from George Lopez and Kenny Chaniawa to give Arroyo Grande (2-1, 3-3-1) a 21-7 lead after one quarter.
Lodbill added a 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Josh Weferling led Paso Robles (2-1, 5-3) with 109 yard and one touchdown, an eight-yard score in the third quarter. Greg Draper completed 13 of 28 passes for 142 yards and one score in the loss for the Bearcats.
Lopez added 34 rushing yards and two TDs, while Chaniawa had 27 yards and the fifth Eagles touchdown.
SLO 40, Lompoc 34
Zack Thorne scored on a 13-yard run in the first possession of overtime gave the Tigers some Homecoming fun with a PAC-7 victory over the visiting Braves (0-4, 2-6).
The Braves had the first crack at the ball in the overtime session, but a rash of penalties and a Tim Ochoa incompletion brought the drive to a halt.
The Tigers (2-1, 6-2) then set up the winning score on a 12-yard pass from Conner Reese to Andrew Acosta one play before Thorne's game-winning play.
The Braves forced the overtime when Lucas Carpio caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from Ochoa with 34 seconds left in regulation, making it 34-32 in the Tigers' favor; Ochoa then threw a successful conversion pass to Daniel Carpio to tie the game.
San Luis Obispo's win creates a three-way tie for second in the PAC-7 with Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles.
