It was obvious that containing Morro Bay running back Kevin Scott was going to be key for Nipomo after the senior rushed for 73 yards in the first quarter Friday Night.
But Scott ran wild over the Titans busting out for 274 yards on 37 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a 25-7 win in the Los Padres League game.
“It's like the old adage: Keep feeding the horse and good things are going to happen,” said Morro Bay coach John Andree. “The last couple of weeks opponents have done a great job of scheming against (Kevin) Scott. Tonight he ran hard and was able to force (his way) up the middle.”
The win moves Morro Bay to 3-1 in the eight-team Los Padres League and 5-2 overall. Andree likes that because his team is above the potential traffic jam of teams knotted at 2-2 in the standings.
Nipomo falls to (1-3 LPL, 3-4) in the bottom half of the league.
At Nipomo High School's field, Scott capped off an 80 yard, five minute drive to get the Pirates on the board with a one-yard run with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter.
The PIrates then jumped ahead 12-0 in the second quarter after quarterback Logan Budd found Manny Lujan wide open in the right corner of the endzone for a touchdown. Budd completed three of seven of his passes for 33 yards.
Nipomo's Steve Otto scored the only Titan touchdown on a 34-`yard scramble up the middle. Brent Seguine's kick was good to keep the game in reach at 12-7.
Otto rushed for 49 yards on four carries and was a big force on special teams with kick returns of 34 and 50 yards.
The Pirates continued pounding away with the running game in the third quarter and Scott broke away from the pack for a 53 yard touchdown with 5:20 remaining for an.
In the fourth quarter Ryan Cummings crushed through the middle for an 11-yard touchdown for Morro Bay with 7:17 left on the clock. Cummings' touchdown was set up by a Nipomo fumble at the 30 yard line.
Brent Sequine and Ray Cano each had interceptions for the Titans.
