Big plays burn SJ in loss to Bishop

SANTA BARBARA - In a game of big plays, St. Joseph's came up a little short, falling to Bishop Diego 21-17 Friday night at La Playa Stadium.

The first half gave no hint of the aerial display to come, as St. Joseph's took a 3-0 lead to the locker room on a 31 yard field goal by John Wood with 3:34 left in the second quarter. The score followed a Bishop fumble recovered by Shawn Winters on the Bishop 31-yard line.

Things changed quickly in the second half. On the fourth play after taking the kickoff, Bishop quarterback Christian Winnewisser hit Kevin Duley with a 52 yard pass play down the right sideline to make the score 6-3. The kick was wide right.

On Bishop's next series, after a 33-yard Winnewisser to Tucker Stein pass, Winnewisser tossed the ball to running back Aaron Skinner who found Craig Kohler in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown. On the 2 point conversion try, Kohler caught a pass from Winnewisser to make the score 14-3.

St. Joseph's came back quickly on three successive Chase Sanders passes, to Daniel Rudolph for 28 yards, to Scott Cathcart for another 9 yards, then a 41-yarder to Rudolph in the far corner of the end zone for the score. Wood's extra point kick made it 14-10.

St. Joseph's went ahead with 8:14 to go on a Sanders to Cathcart pass for 4 yards. Wood's extra point moved St. Joseph's in front 17-10. The big play on the drive was another Sanders to Cathcart pass for 51 yards down the right side to the Bishop 10 yard line.

On Bishop's next series, Josh Kohansamad put Bishop ahead for good with a 5 yard run set up by a 22 yard Winnewisser to Brian Ford pass. Tucker Stein's extra point made the final score 21-17.

Bishop managed to run out the clock after three straight Sanders passes fell short.

Both junior quarterbacks had outstanding nights. Winnewisser passed for 198 yards on 9 for-15 attempts while Sanders had 141 yards on 9 for 18 passes.

Bishop goes to 3-1 on the season, while St. Joseph's falls to 1-2.

Santa Maria 21, King City 14

KING CITY - A last-gasp effort by the host Mustangs fell short as the Saints improved to 2-1 with a non-league road victory.

Saints quarterback Daniel Gauna rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries with a second-quarter touchdown, while Julian Ortiz had 88 yards on 10 carries, highlighted by a 60-yard touchdown scamper for the Saints' final touchdown.

Santa Maria got on the board in the first quarter with a 35-yard touchdown run by Halston Champan.

King City (0-3) tried to rally in the latter stages, pulling to 21-14 with 3:16 to go on an eight-yard scoring pass from Aaron Lopez to Gerardo Lopez. After Santa Maria recovered the onside kick, King City recovered a Saints fumble. However, Santa Maria's defense held on a fourth-and-three play to seal the victory.
