‘God Bless America' poster yanked

The God Bless America poster that used to hang in the Lompoc post office lobby is now in the back room out of public view.

That's the way Lompoc resident Matt Hughes likes it.

Hughes, a vocal atheist and advocate for the separation of church and state, was offended by the sign and complained to the postmaster, who ordered it taken down last month.

The red, white and blue poster has a large American flag above the words “God Bless America.”

Post office employees were as offended as Hughes, not by the poster but by the postmaster's decision.

“We're just upset and we're offended that we can't show support for our country,” said Cathy Hefferman, lobby director at the post office. “This is a time that you need to do that.”

Hefferman said Hughes had every right to ask that the sign be taken down. But she said postal employees had a right to be able to keep the poster where they work.

Hughes disagreed.

“They posted a religious expression, in this case, a prayer, and it's not the business of our government to be promoting religion,” Hughes said. “That's the business of our churches.”

The poster had been hanging on a wall above the customer service area since 2001. It was placed there, where clerks accept packages from customers, shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Hughes said a supervisor's initial response to his request was resistant.

“I first spoke to a supervisor who told me, ‘It's not coming down,'” Hughes said. “He refused and said ‘That's not coming down. You can complain to Washington if you want, but it's not coming down.'”

Several days later, Hughes discovered that it had been taken down.

“I'm delighted that it's down. I think there's no reason that a government facility should have the largest word in the customer services area be the name of some people's deity,” Hughes said.

“For some people, their god is named Jehovah or Allah. Some people worship Buddha. Some people worship the flying spaghetti monster. But the Christians and Jews have named their god, God with the capital G, and that's whose god was listed in the post office. If there is a god, I would wish he would bless everyone - not just America.”

Hefferman said the Lompoc postmaster got authorization from the main regional office in San Luis Obispo to remove the sign.

“For one person to come in and say it offends him that is his right, but it's also our right to have that up there,” Hefferman said. “I just think he stepped on our rights. He has the right for his booth downtown (Olde Towne Market) and that's his right, so we should have the right to display what we want and if he's offended by something we have in our business then he can take his business elsewhere.”

Adele Carter, another post office employee, said she was also disappointed by the removal.

“I believe God does bless America,” Carter said. The same America that gives us our freedom of speech, is the same America that lets him speak and give him his freedom of speech.

Hughes, a former Sunday school teacher, disagreed.

“The post office is not an appropriate place for people to be speaking for or against god,” Hughes said. “Not in a way that makes it appear that the government is sharing this opinion. People can go to the public square and pray to their heart's content. People are free to do whatever they want in public, but the people at the post office don't get to use the post office to share their religious beliefs because it gives the appearance that the government is endorsing their beliefs.”

It is offending for us/those that do believe in God that we cannot even say God Bless America, it was a sign, not someone speaking and teaching it, those that are offended, should be happy they are living, in a World that was formed by GOD. I for one, am glad that God has blessed America and his people that reside here. "

" The Post Office has every right to keep the poster up, since it is not a tax supported government body. It generates revenue from sales like every other company. In addition, asking God to support our country is not an endorsement of any particular religion. How many DIFFERENT faiths have a belief in God. Even Atheism should be considered a religious belief since they must rely on their faith that there is no God. So to compel others to remove their support for God one way or another is in effect the endorsement of a more specific religion. "

" As postal employees, we have no right to post religious signs in the lobby or anywhere a customer can see them. In case anyone forgot, we have the nationwide retail standardization plan that is in effect and the plan requires NO signs be posted in the lobby unless they are part of the US postal service authorized displays. Period. Postal employees at that office say they are upset that they can't show support for their country and this is ridiculous. Of course you can show support, just not in your lobby. Employees are free to display signs at their homes or place bumper stickers on they cars, they just can't post signs at work and I think this is reasonable. "

This country was founded on democratic principles which include the right to vote and with this the right of the majority to decide what they want in their country. This is not a dictatorship where the "rights" of one individual can determine policy that affects everyone. What about the rights of rest of the population? Every week there is another example like this where spineless bureaucrats cave into the quirks of a single individual. It is really frightening! "

" As a former Central Coast resident, I cannot resist responding to the article about the "God Bless America" sign being taken down from the Lompoc Post Office. As I understand it, 86% of Americans believe in God, and 14% are Atheists. It amazes me that the 14% continually get their way, while it seems that the majority of Americans wishes are ignored. Apparently, it is ok for the Athiests to demand and get almost anything they want, but what about the rest of us??? It wouldn't surprise me at all if eventually, any reference to God is outlawed, whether it be on our money, in books, on buildings, and every where else. If and when that does happen, I believe our country will go right down the drain. As for me, I will continue to say "God Bless America" anywhere and any time that I want to, and if Athiests don't like it, maybe they would be happier living in another country that thinks like they do. If Hughes is so opposed to any type of religious references in this country he should look at what our country was founded on. He needs to review his history of why and how this country was founded. He needs to review the original intent of our nations founding forefathers. Why has he not challenged the fact that congress is opened in prayer, or the fact that there religious expressions on our nations currency and on our Nations buildings in Washington, DC. This is not about his right to oppose or disagree with the poster. It is about Hughes himself. Get a life and leave hard working, patriotic Americans along. God Bless America. "

" Why don't we come up with a sign that says, "Bless America"? That way the message can be taken in the context by the majority of American's belief in God, as well as others' beliefs/dieties without appearing "offensive" to other religious/nonreligious minorities. I can't comprehend why Mr. Hughes is so offended....he doesn't believe in God or any diety for that matter, so this poster shouldn't mean anything to him. He obviously has a lot of time on his hands to cause all this unnecessary tension in our area. It's too bad all this "energy" he's producing can't be put towards positive and constructive use for our society, instead of presenting it in the form of such nusciance. I believe the reason our forefathers sought out this country, intitially, was for freedom of religion AND government. Mr. Hughes, no matter what his beliefs are, has the right and freedom to speak his mind; but, in this country, it takes a "majority's vote" for decisions to ultimately be made. Get over it, already. Should they be allowed to post anti-war or anti-Bush posters in the post office? It says the state cant make an establishment of a particular religion meaning they cant establish a denomination or certain religion. Saying God Bless America, doesnt establish a religion. That statement does imply a belief in God but does not establish a Catholic religion of baptist or Muslim. It is a pretty general statement. " There are a lot of materials to review with regard to "separation of church and state". Some pro, some con. Everyone is entitled to their viewpoint. But history is the record. During the drafting of the first amendment, the founding fathers made it clear what their intentions were. "We do not want in America what we had in Great Britain: we don't want one denomination running the nation. We will not all be Catholics, or Anglicans, or any other single denomination. We do want God's principles, but we don't want one denomination running the nation." This is clearly documented in the Congressional Records from June 7th through September 25th of 1789. Going one step further, 10 years later in 1799, a court declared "By our form of government, the Christian religion is the established religion; and all sects and denominations of Christians are placed on the same equal footing." There is emphasis on: "We do want Christian principles -- we do want God's principles -- but we don't want one denomination to run the nation." So there WAS intent for Christianity to be the established religion! Just not for the Baptists, Anglicans or Lutherans, etc to become the national denomination. Since Christianity was meant to be the established “religion”, and since all “denominations” of Christianity believe in the same God, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who died on the cross and rose again on the third day, there is no violation of “separation of church and state” with regard to the poster. (Side note: the god of Islam IS NOT the God of Christianity. The god of Islam originated from the worship of a moon god in ancient times. Look it up!) In 1854, the strong declaration was made by the Judiciary Committee: “The great, vital, and conservative element in our system [the thing that holds our system together] is the belief of our people in the pure doctrines and divine truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” In summation, Mrs. Hefferman, after having reviewed this material and our nations historic documents with your upper management, your findings will 100% support placing the poster back in its place. For the record, Yes, I am a Christian of Baptist denomination. And, Yes, I do support, in the name of the God of America, Jesus Christ, putting the poster back up. I stand firm, knowing He is blessing His people. We don’t just “Stand United”, we “Stand United In Christ”! "

" In regards to the poster God Bless America being removed from the post office, where is the freedom of speech that persons wanting the poster to stay have. One person makes a complaint and we jump. We are still under the misconception that any mention of God is a violation of the misconstrued phrase "separation of church and state." This separation merely means that no religion can be state sanctioned nor forced upon citizens. Even JFK stated this in his decision not let public money fund Catholic schools. This country was founded on the freedom to worship God in the way an individual chooses. Although many of the colonies were started by persons of different religions (Quakers in Penn, Catholics in Maryland), when the country unified it was stated that no one religion will be preferred over another. This was the practice that our founding fathers meant when the term "separation of church and state" came up, not just simply mentioning God in public. It is a sad day when the greatest country in the history of the world bows down to one person. What ever happened to majority rule? "God Bless America" is not a expression of Christian fundamentalist propaganda, it's simply a nationally supported sentiment. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in God and have sent a message to all Americans and the world, "God Bless America." How can one man be allowed to take that away? I don't like the fact that on televsion shows at 800pm (the supposed family hour for prime time television) non married people talk about having sex. Pre-teen children have no business hearing this, and are exposed to this on a nightly basis. This practice on a public medium offends me. However, if I don't like what I hear on the television program, I change it. I can't make stations remove these programs. This would be forcing my religious beliefs on the country. The guy who didn't like the poster has the same rights as me, no more no less. If he didn't like the poster, he didn't have to look at it. However, he was allowed to have the post office remove the poster. He was able to enforce his belief as an atheist on the people of Santa Maria. The mere fact that the Santa Maria Times encourages persons to express their opinions on this and other issues, shows what true freedom of expression is all about. "

" Ha! So I see that an organized letter writing campaign to this forum has been started by (I'm assuming) a Christian fundamentalist source. Why suddenly are people writing from all over the country? Well, my simple-minded friends, rest assured that there are enough people who truly believe in a country that allows for all forms of religious freedom (pray, go to church, preach on the street, etc.) but don't want our government (or its "semi-independent" agencies) to express any deity-inspired slogans. There are too many deities out there to only allow one to be the inspiration. Otherwise, we should allow Buddha inspired slogans, Allah inspired slogans, Vishnu inspired slogans, Native American Gods inspired slogans, so on. The list is endless. And, why not "god bless the world?" Why just America? Since when has god's blessings been confined to man-made geographic boundaries? Look, I absolutely have no problem with people practicing their religion. I start having a problem with it when people start taking the mandate of spreading the word of the lord to the point that it intrudes in my space and is always in my face. I actually get offended when people start marketing Jesus Christ as if he were a toothpaste brand with commercials, bumper stickers and the like. I won't even get into the scum-buckets (i.e. tele-evangelists and their ilk) who suck money from desperate people looking for inner-peace and salvation........all in the name of Jesus Christ. Anyway, go to church, send your kids to religious schools so they can pray in peace, say grace at the dinner table, etc., etc. I just want the government to be religious neutral, even if its employees and lawmakers are god-fearing, church going people. " Hughes argument is "God is only used by Christians and Jews to refer to their diety, whereas "god" refers to all believers dieties". Hughes is offended because the government, by only endorsing what Hughes claims is a subset of the dieties believed by the entire world, is showing a preference of diety and therefore religion. Hughes is offended because the government is showing a preference of diety and therefore religion by only endorsing what Hughes claims is a subset of the dieties believed by the entire world - "God" - as opposed to "god". Hughes then states "If there is a god, I would wish he would bless everyone - not just America." There are two issues: 1) Hughes is "offended" because not all believed dieties are requested to perform a blessing. 2) Hughes "wishes" that the requested diety be requesed to bless the entire world, as opposed to only blessing America. Hughes would prefer "god bless the entire world" but would not be offended by "god bless America". The solution is simple - change "God" to "god". I suspect if this were done, Hughes would all of a sudden be offended by something else. "

" Dear Editor, Has your postmaster lost his mind? Bending over backwards for one single athiest when the vast majority of his citizens would rather the "God Bless America" poster stayed? The truth of the matter is that your postmaster would rather offend the Judeo/Christian majority than one single athiest, who obviously has issues of his own. Actually, even the majority of atheists DON'T CARE! I suggest that anyone who thinks that this is a pathetic response to one lone atheist do as we have done, and have nice big hand stamps made that say, "In God We Trust". Every single piece of mail that leaves our home or businesses has the stamp on it, on the front. I don't worry about causing offense. "

" I am glad to see all the support. I have researched and found a similar thing happened in Texas in 2003 : Please read they had a banner that read like ours. : Texas Controversy Spurs USPS to Design Its Own National Motto Poster (2003) As a result, the Postal Service announced that a poster of its own design would be posted in all 38,000 Post Offices across the country. That was helped by the discovery that a resolution in the House of Representatives in 2000 had been passed encouraging posting the motto in public buildings. The new poster for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is designed to look like a large stamp with a drawing of the Statue of Liberty in the middle and the motto printed above the crown. In a Houston Chronicle report, postal spokesman David Lewin said the USPS wanted to comply with the spirit of a resolution adopted two years ago that supported placing the motto in every public building possible. I am hoping in passing this to our district office we will be allowed to put a new banner up. Our Postmaster has been supported but had to do as his superiors ordered. "

" Wasn't it Jesus who said, "rend onto Ceasar what is Ceasar's?" Why are you arguing about a sign in a post office? Why aren't you posting angry rants about all the death caused by this war that the "God Bless America" poster is endorsing, didn't Jesus tell us to love our enemies and to turn the other cheek? Why aren't you angry about all the poverty in this obscenely rich country? While Jesus loved us all, he spoke of the poor, the meek, the just and the hungry more favorably than the rich and the falsely pious, so quit pretending, take off the bumper stickers off your cars and do something good for a change. Go help your neighbor, ask your leaders to stop the fighting, adopt an abandoned animal, do some volunteer work, lend your support to a pregnant (scared) teenager, or invite your priest/pastor to dinner, do something that truly makes God HAPPY. " How is it we can say that there is no God? Look around you, and look at yourself. Are we not so intricatey and perfectly designed. Everything did not just radomly fall into place. Our bodies are in itself living testominies of his greatness. Our mind is one of the most beautiful things God created because people can restrict what you do but they cannot restrict your power to think and worship. Religion is not a gift, it is a right that no man has the power to take away. God was placed as the foundation for our young nation, but without our firm foundation our nation will collapse. Lets not wait for another 9-11 attack to be unified under God once again. "

If he is so anti-GOD ... how can he possibly stand conducting his financial life with bills that say "In God We Trust". Maybe he could come to NYC and see where the WTC use to stand and think of all those souls that were killed in the attack of 9-11. They can't speak for themselves, so I say "In God We Trust" and leave us alone. "

James Madison If Atheism writes upon the blackboard of the Universe a question mark, it writes it for the purpose of stating that there is a question yet to be answered. Is it not better to place a question mark upon a problem while seeking an answer than to put the label "God" there and consider the matter solved? Does not the word "God" only confuse and make more difficult the solution by assuming a conclusion that is utterly groundless and palpably absurd? The next time these pious folks want to hang a religious poster in a government building, perhaps they should ponder the words of John Adams---- I shall have liberty to think for myself without molesting others or being molested myself. But, it got to the point where I couldn't stand paying for and reading this paper anymore. When I saw this article just this past weekend, I was reminded of the absolute gall of some useless, highly-opinionated people of the geriatric persuasion. If I go on a rant (except this one), inflict tired geezerdom upon others, or demand that a change be made to accomodate my beliefs, I would hope someone would remind me that I'm not the ruler by which everyone should be measured. " You know, this is just one more instance of our government actually establishing a religion. If the government will support the "beliefs" of an Atheist and conduct enforcement activities which are demanded by this "belief" then they are setting one type of belief over another. This is what happens when government steps in and attempts to "legislate" issues which are better handled other wise. If something I do is offensive to you, don't come around. If you are offensive to me, I will reciprocate. DON'T force me to accept YOUR position on anything if you are not ready, willing, and able to accept MINE. "

" I am not very religious, but even I don't take a God Bless America sign in a US post office as our government promoting religion. If the government wanted to promote religion they might do what they used to do in England, one might recall the Church of England, Thomas Beckett, and Henry the VIII. But one thing I am gratified here is the number of responses on this issue, it seemed to strike a chord. Speaking out regardless of which side you are on is what America is to me, freedom of expression, and that freedom is a way we learn, the interchange of different points of view. "
