Santa Maria

Delays possible on Highway 135

Motorists traveling between Santa Maria and Orcutt may experience delays of 15 minutes on Highway 135 starting Monday.

Caltrans is beginning work on a section of roadway between Skyway Drive and Goodwin Road, which will last until Thursday afternoon, said Marta Bortner, spokeswoman for Caltrans.

Crews will be doing signal work during the day and pavement grinding at night.

Shooting victim still in critical condition

Shooting victim Anthony Johnson remained in critical condition Saturday, after being shot Thursday after an argument at a Lompoc convenience store.

Johnson, 21, a star athlete who graduated from Lompoc High School in 2001, was in surgery for at least six hours late Thursday and early Friday.

He was shot shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday after an argument with a clerk at Kim's Jiffy Food Store, 2001 North H St., where he had gone to cash a payroll check, according to a witness.

Man shot while trying to stop theft

A Santa Maria man was shot Friday night after trying to stop someone from stealing his car in the 1700 block of South Thornburg Street.

Jose Noriega, 28, suffered a gunshot wound to his neck and left ear after he confronted a man trying to take his 1990 Honda Civic, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Noriega ran away and the suspect fired another shot at him, but missed.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 140 pounds with a shaved head, mustache and wearing a striped short-sleeved shirt, officers said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Maria Police Department at 928-3781, Ext. 483.

Man arrested on multiple warrants

A Santa Maria man was arrested Friday around 11:30 a.m. for suspicion of outstanding warrants for vehicle theft, battery and being under the influence of methamphetamine.

Officers arrested Christopher Jones, 18, after neighbors in the 1000 block of West Frank Street complained he was making too much noise, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Jones was recognized as having outstanding warrants, and with his help officers were able to find the stolen vehicle.

Jones was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Man arrested for counterfiet check

Raymond Gilliam, 35, of Santa Maria was arrested Saturday around 1 p.m. for allegedly trying to cash a counterfeit check at a business in the 100 block of West Tunnel, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Gilliam was booked in Santa Barbara County Jail in lieu of bail.

Police arrest man for concealed weapon

Miguel Gutierrez, 20, of Santa Maria was arrested Saturday around 1:45 under suspicion of having a concealed weapon, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Gutierrez allegedly entered a home in the 1200 block of West Orange without permission, but later fled from the scene, police said. When he was later confronted, officers found a makeshift knife in his pocket.




Santa Ynez

Garage fire causes $20,000 in damage

A fire in the garage of a partially-constructed house at 3570 Willow in Santa Ynez caused $20,000 of damage Saturday afternoon, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The fire took less than 20 minutes to extinguish, and there were no injuries as a result of the blaze, firefighters said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.




San Luis Obispo

Warning system test at start of August

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services will be testing the Early Warning System sirens on Aug. 2 and 3 as part of operation and maintenance checks, to prepare for an emergency.

The sirens are sounded once for twenty seconds until all 131 sirens in the system are tested. The testing will take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and the public is urged not to call 9-1-1 during these times, according to Meg Swearingen, coordinator.
