Brian Kent/Staff

The Elks Beard-A-Reno whisker growing contest requires men to be clean shaven on Feb. 21. From then til Saturday they worked to grow the best facial hair they could muster. Categories included the reddest beard, best mustache and best sideburns. Women were also invited to compete for the title of Ms. Wrangler.

Bruce Carmitchel, above, of Santa Maria, gets inspected by Conrad Calderon before being named winner of the "Whitest Beard." Leonard Delgado, left, of Orcutt won best goatee.

The winners of the various categories were awarded custom silver belt buckles.

This event, held Saturday at the Elks Lodge, is one of the kick-offs for the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo, which runs from June 2 through June 5 and brings the excitement of wild horse races, bull riding and barrel racing to the Central Coast.
