Eagles beaten at their own game

ARROYO GRANDE -The Arroyo Grande Eagles and Palma Chieftains run virtually the same offensive and defensive systems. Thanks to experience, Palma's system came out on top 24-13 Friday at Doug Hitchen Stadium.

This is the second consecutive loss for the Eagles (3-2), who were ranked No. 4 in CIF-Southern Section Division IV heading into the game. Arroyo Grande lost at Lompoc, 32-16, last week.

Eagle head coach Jon Huss chalked the loss up to experience.

"It's why we scheduled this game," he said. "We have to get ready to play against tough opponents but control our emotions. This is a young team. They've never played a serious, on-the-line game on varsity."

The Salinas-based private school has won three of the last four CIF-Central Coast Section Division I championships. Earlier in this season, the Cheiftains tied De La Salle, which entered the year with a national-record, 151-game winning streak.

Huss blamed the team's excitment for some of its seven penalties, which cost the Eagles 55 yards.

But yellow flags weren't the only thing that hurt the Eagles, who were also unable to mount many substantial drives. Arroyo Grande gained only 166 yards of offense. Leading rusher Andrew Hirsch tied his low output of the season, gaining only 65 yards on the ground. He also gained 65 yards last week against Lompoc.

Thee Eagles' only touchdown came when they got the ball on Palma's 45-yard line late in the first half. The Chieftains had started on their own 3-yard line after Jordan Casas slipped while fielding the kickoff.

The Eagles drove the 45 yards in six plays. Quarterback Kyle Pollock capped the drive when he hit a wide-open Deangelo Waller from 16 yards out. Joe Cozby's extra point tied the score at 10 with 1:59 left in the first half.

Pollock, who sat last week for discplinary reasons, had only three completions for 40 yards, though.

Cozby accounted for the Eagles' other six points by kicking field goals of 26 and 38 yards. He now has five field goals in his last two games.

Palma was actually penalized more than the Eagles - 14 times for 115 yards - but was able to recover from its miscues.

"We've played a lot of big games," Palma head coach Jeff Carnazzo said. "We're battle tested."

In the second half Friday, Palma quickly broke the tie the Eagles had worked so hard to salvage in the final minutes of the first half.

On the third play of the third quarter, Chieftain running back Barry Knappe ran 55 yards down the left sideline, leaping over fallen Eagle cornerback John Colletta on the way to the end zone to make the score 17-10 in favor of the visitors.

Palma scored its final touchdown with 9:04 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by fullback Justin Sammut. The Eagles had stopped Palma on its previous two goal-line plays, but could not stop the sweep right. That made it a two-possession ballgame, 24-13.

Dos Pueblos 15, Righetti 10

SANTA BARBARA - Ryan Shotwell's 54-yard touchdown run two minutes into the second half proved to be the game-winning score as the Chargers (1-3) earned their first win of the season.

Righetti managed only 98 rushing yards on the night, led by a mere 45 yards on 15 carries by tailback Mark Malangko.

Dos Pueblos quarterback Kellen Moriarty completed 17 of 23 passes for 161 yards in the victory, but did not throw a touchdown pass.

Francisco Chavez had a 21-yard field goal for the Warrior (2-3), while quarterback Joseph Dally had a nine-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Garietz in the fourth quarter.

Lompoc 28, Nipomo 21

NIPOMO - The banged up Braves got a scare from the Titans before they secured their 16th consecutive win.

Lompoc is 5-0-0 overall. Nipomo is 1-4-0. Both teams made their season LPL debut.

Quarterback Boo Jackson didn't play because of an injured ankle. Early in the game, Lompoc defensive standout Clay Greco went down with an injured knee. The status of both was uncertain at press time.

Nipomo took the lead twice, the last time on Bryce Seguine's two-point conversion pass that made the score 15-14 in the third quarter.

Later in the third, Lompoc took the lead for good when backup quarterback Tim Ochoa threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Scott. Tryrell Coleman then helped bail Lompoc out with a late interception.

Nipomo's first lead came when Mike Cleary's kick put the Titans ahead 7-6. Scott scored Lompoc's first touchdown on a 2-yard run. He then caught a 32-yard toss from John Terrones on a double option halfback pass for another score.

Cabrillo 45, Santa Ynez 6

VANDENBERG VILLAGE - Cabrillo ran through the Pirates for 405 yards, and Santa Ynez sophomore quarterback Billy Peters couldn't play because of an injury.

All that helped add up to a home team rout in the Los Padres League opener for both teams. Cabrillo is 4-0-0 overall and off to its best start in years. Santa Ynez is 1-2-1.

Peters passed for 201 yards in the Pirates' victory last week, but the injury kept him sidelined Friday night.

Cabrillo's Vai Taua and Lydell Sargeant, meanwhile, played with gusto. Taua had touchdown runs of 46 and 20 yards. He ran for 160 yards all told.

Sargeant, the area rushing leader, had 145 yards. He scored on runs of 4 and 38 yards. He also found wide open C.J. Simmons on a halfback option pass. Simmons took care of the rest, running for a score to complete an 89-yard touchdown play.

Seaside 28, Atascadero 25

ATASCADERO - The Greyhounds scored 15 fourth-quater points by couldn't come up with a non-league victory over the Monterey-based Spartans at Memorial Stadium.

Travis Jones had 139 passing yards, including a 60-yard scoring strike to Carl Frazier in the first quarter.

Seaside's Jermaine Carter threw two touchdown passes in the victory, throwing for 133 yards in the air.
