Lompoc opens title defense with blowout of San Marino

LOMPOC - This football game was competitive at halftime.

As the third quarter went along, it wasn't competitive anymore.

Defending CIF Division X Lompoc parlayed a big third quarter into a 48-6 first-round win over San Marino at Huyck Stadium Friday night. The Braves (9-2) led just 12-0 at halftime over the Titans (4-7).

Lompoc outscored the visitors 29-6 in the third quarter. Three long scoring runs did the Titans in.

Victor Lara broke a run for a 35-yard touchdown. Boo Jackson sprinted in from 23 yards out, then Armando Guttierez scored from 30 yards away.

Joseph Scott added a 6-yard touchdown run for the Braves later in the quarter. That made it 41-0. San Marino finally scored on Chris Hazell's 59-yard pass to Andrew Gazanjian.

Lompoc's quarterfinal opponent will be either Bassett of La Puente or South Torrance. If the Braves play South Torrance, they must go there. If they take on Bassett, a coin flip will determine the game site.

Lompoc edged South Torrance 42-40 in the first round last year. Chauncey Washington scored all of South Torrance's touchdowns then. He plays at USC now.

Scott scampered for 139 yards on just nine carries Friday night. Jackson had 98 on seven. The Braves ran for 414 yards.

San Marino had just 52 yards rushing. Hazell did pass for 174 yards.

Lara scored the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run. Guttierez kicked four extra points for the Braves.

During the regular season, Lompoc won the Los Padres League handily for the second straight year. None of the Braves' games went to the wire.

Friday night, Lompoc got its first half touchdowns on an 18-yard run for Jackson and a 2-yard run by Guttierez.

Culver City, whom Lompoc routed in the semifinals last year, is the top seed in Division X.

INGLEWOOD - A 3-yard touchdown run for the Sentinels in the third quarter accounted for the score in this Division X first-rounder.
