Facing Nipomo without its school-record rushing running back Joe Garcia, the Morro Bay football team manhandled Nipomo 56-0 Friday at Hitchen Stadium.
Garcia, out with a sprained ankle, had his shoes filled by junior Corey Stollmeyer who rushed for 155 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns.
"He's a good back," said Morro Bay coach Jon Andree. "He'd probably be starting on any team in the county other than ours."
Stollmeyer ran the opening kickoff 71 yards to start the Pirates on the Titans' 20-yard line.
Four plays later, Morro Bay (1-0, 3-1) scored on a 1-yard run by Steve Dover. Anson Shaffer converted the extra point to give Morro Bay an early 7-0 lead.
Nipomo had a tough time moving the ball, facing many three-and-out situations.
"In the first half our offense only had two first downs," said Nipomo coach Jon Hitchen. "We didn't move the ball. If you don't move the ball and you don't punt well, field position is going to be ugly."
The Pirates started all but one of their 13 possessions in the game on Nipomo's side of the field.
"They couldn't get (good) field position and their special teams didn't help them out," Andree said, "so we were playing on a short field all night."
Stollmeyer scored on the Pirates' second possession with a 51-yard run, and gave the Pirates a 21-0 lead on a 6-yard run with 31.8 seconds left in the first quarter.
Dover scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, on 6- and 2-yard runs, respectively.
Stollmeyer scored his third touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run with 3:54 remaining in the half. On the previous play, Stollmeyer broke off a big run where he headed right, then changed directions and swept left as his holes closed on the right side, gaining 44 yards.
Dover scored in the third quarter on a 1-yard plunge, and second-string quarterback Robert Ellithorpe hit Pat Haugen on a 45-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring at 56-0.
All of Shaffer's extra points were good.
With time waning in the first half, and Morro Bay driving, the Pirates called a timeout raising the ire of the Titan faithful.
However, Andree said the Pirates were just changing their play.
"The offensive coordinator had called a streak," he said, "and I called a timeout so that we wouldn't score.
"We had our second string in pretty much the entire second half. We weren't trying to run it up."
One problem plaguing the Pirates was penalties. Morro Bay (1-0, 3-1) finished with 10 penalties for 105 yards, including four personal fouls. The Titans had nine penalties for 59 yards.
