THE MAVEN

Hair today, but gone before you know it

The years are flying by and I’ve been bitten by the nostalgia bug.

Sweet notes in Santa Maria; SB CAN can party

"The horn was so beautiful,” said Judy Hearn after hearing the Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert Saturday at Grace Baptist Church. “It was such a fabulous concert. His tone and his presentation were outstanding. We were blessed to have him in this concert.”

Indulge Mom on her special day

Mother’s Day raises the annual challenge: what to do to show Mom that you care? Luckily, this weekend in Santa Barbara offers an array of diverse activities sure to bring a sparkle to the eye of just about any mom. Surprise and indulge her!

Dark Sky lights path for musicians

A Human and his STDs wanted more exposure

So the underground, punk-rock band based in Santa Maria paid $100 to Dark Sky Records, owned by Rich Macke and his business partner, Greg Santori, to be on a compilation CD that was distributed to college and underground radio stations and Internet radio stations. The band received 10 CDs of their own, which they could sell back to others if they wanted to.

Human (who said he won’t reveal his real name to anyone) owns his own record label based in Santa Maria, Back Door Records, so you’d think he wouldn’t need the help of another label. But Human said at the local level, the focus is more on collaboration than competition, because bands need all the exposure they can get.

Dark Sky Records specializes in underground music, which is mostly hard rock and metal, with other sub-genres like thrash and punk, and even alternative forms of rap and hip-hop. According to Macke, underground music, unlike mainstream music like country or pop, is rarely played on radio stations.

Heritage Day: From the heart of the West

Theater review: ‘Doors’ wild, open

The Santa Maria Civic Theatre’s new play, “Communicating Doors,” is a seamless exercise in suspense with a good dose of sexual humor and the right amount of sweetness.

Movie review: Exceptionally funny ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’

Judd Apatow, the producer responsible for the popular comedies “The 40-Year Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and “Superbad,” scores again with his latest offering, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Apatow and director Nicholas Stoller assemble a talented cast who navigate the clever and funny script written by and starring Jason Segel.
