TODAY'S OPINIONS

Add to My Yahoo!

  • The business of politics

The 111th U.S. Congress opened for business on Tuesday, and it was, truly, business as usual.

  • More rumbles in the valley

The games are under way as well at the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. The only thing yet to be decided is the score.

  • A few predictions for the new year

Gov. Schwarz-reneger will soon discover that the diesel engine rule he helped create is going to have a devastating effect upon the transportation, construction and farming sectors of our economy.

  • TODAY'S LETTERS

      Poor choices for Orcutt

On Jan. 27, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will meet to decide on how many very-low-income and low-income affordable housing units will be built in the Orcutt area. The state mandate is 370 units, at 20 units per acre, at three to four stories high.

      Short hours at local PO

Last Friday, I was at our local post office on Battles Road, and the lobby was closed.

      More bumbling from leaders

Once again, our bumbling president and his cohorts have proved they know nothing about our economy or how to fix it.

      Big Three earned help

Bail out Ford, Chrysler, GM? Why should we do that? That would be subsidizing an American company.

    CITIZEN COMMENTARY

    Questions for city, county

Why are the animal laws not enforced? Dogs and cats running all over the city of Santa Maria. Animal poop on sidewalks and streets. Animals not on a leash and poop not picked up by their owners.

If property costs have decreased in value, why have property taxes not decreased? The county Board of Supervisors has failed in total.

Why are there no laws to stop garden contractors from blowing the leaves and

stuff from the work-area yards onto the streets? There needs to be a law that requires vacuuming the waste, instead of blowing the leaves and stuff onto the streets.

Why are Santa Maria streets so dirty? Litter laws are not enforced, and streets are very dirty and unsightly.

Where are the district supervisors? Missing in action.

    Donald Carter/Santa Maria
